Sleep apnoea refers to pauses in breathing during sleep. These breathing interruptions are caused by a sleep-related relaxation of the soft palate and the base of the tongue, which can partially or completely block the airway for short or longer periods.

As a result, the brain and other organs are temporarily supplied with too little oxygen.

The following morning, patients often feel exhausted and unrefreshed. Concentration and performance are frequently significantly reduced. Microsleep episodes while driving have already led to serious accidents.

Because snoring is the most noticeable symptom at night, sleep apnoea is often mistaken for harmless snoring.

Anyone who snores heavily at night and suffers from daytime sleepiness or fatigue should be examined for possible sleep apnoea. This condition is frequently underdiagnosed, as an estimated 75–80% of affected individuals remain undiagnosed because they do not seek medical evaluation.

If left untreated, sleep apnoea can reduce life expectancy by up to 10 years. It also significantly increases the risk of heart attack, heart failure, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Fortunately, sleep-related breathing disorders are easy to diagnose and can be treated very effectively.
